So I had this great idea, since I enjoy writing so much, that I would daily get on a random news website, pick out a headline, and do a brief blog about the subject.
I navigated to a top website for news, I mean a legit website, that you would think would be about subjects that matter. The website is also considered Republican and conservative by most people. I had a hard time picking a topic...
The main headline was about a scandalous divorce/affair involving a political figure.
The next three major headlines on the site were about economy, war, and politics, all negative of course.
Of the eight most read/most popular stories, five are about deaths, one is about a young child's physical ailment that could lead to death, the destruction of a mega church by force in China, and an article where marines are training farmers to be police.
In between these two categories are large arrows keeping us up on the little bit that the stock market has increased or decreased.
Below the stories is a huge section called "Features" that has a large picture beside each article. Of the ten features, eight are about celebrities' lives, actions, or opinions, four are about movies, four are about scandal, four women are scattered through the pictures in either bikinis or bras, and one feature will actually take you to a slideshow of "bra free celebrities". Finally after all of this, the very last two features contain a cool collection of pictures from the worlds of science and space.
I very quickly counted thirty-one advertisements selling everything from medicine, to sex, to thinner thighs.
Lastly I see here that there is a box where I can enter my email address and the site will send me the latest breaking news... Yeah right!!! Not only will this surely include my email be giving to SPAM, I just really don't want my phone going off every ten minutes when the next death or rape or scandal happen.
I could probably type for another hour of what I found on this site, again it being a very legit and respected site, and this is all on only the home page of the site, without clicking on a single link or category!
I am not a very big proponent of blinding our eyes to things, and I actually have probably found a measure of pride that I did grow up in the world unshielded and I have a grounded view of reality, but...its just a sad thing to me that there are probably millions (I don't know the number) who daily get up, start their day, and go to this website to get the daily updates. This is how much negativity, temptation, hatred, gossip, and evil are being injected into our lives every single day, and this website honestly is probably much better than most. If I start thinking bigger scale, to television, commercials, worse websites, newspapers, billboards, work environments...it kind of overwhelms me.
The whole time I have been typing and researching this, I have had the IHOP website playing in the background, where Cory Asbury is leading a worship set. Some great phrases have stuck out to me as I've typed:
"My beloved is beautiful, dazzling and excellent." "I was made to gaze all of my days, I was made to gaze on beauty. "I finally found where I belong, in Your presence, I finally found where I belong, to be with You." "My soul longs for You, nothing else will do." "People get ready, Jesus is coming."
I hope you all can discern the vast differences between the "highlights" our world has to offer, and the glory of knowing Jesus, that He alone is dazzling and excellent, that we were made to gaze on Him, that we belong in His presence, nothing else will fill our souls longing, and to say no to this world and long even more for His coming...that we would arrange all of our days accordingly, that we wouldn't start our day sucking in the poison of the world, stressing about a 0.3% decrease in the stock market, or submitting myself to being tempted out of His presence by forms of entertainment that please our eyes and our evil desires. If its not temptation to you than it is distraction.
Just simply looking at Jesus and sitting in His presence is so much more glorious!
