That being said, living with him recently has allowed the discovery of a few things. My grandpa refuses to allow me to throw anything away. If I have a bottle of water and I leave it a tenth of the way full, he won't let me throw it away. He'll leave them by the couch where I sleep until I finish it. I currently have about four almost empty bottles lined up next to my bed. If I get a meal at a fast food place, he'll look into the trash to make sure I ate it all and didn't throw anything away.
He is huge on making use of everything and never wasting anything. I was wondering about his theories on this one night as I was rading the fridge. Come to think of it the food in his fridge never seemed to change...
I picked up two items in the fridge to check the dates on them.
Item number 1- expiration date DEC2009, not that bad I guess...
Item number 2- expiration date APR2001, wow...
What's the lesson here...My grandpa will never use these items (I hope). He just can't come to terms with letting it go.
Maybe there are things in my life that have expired and I know it, but I don't want to waste them so I hang on.
Or maybe my grandpa really just doesn't know they expired, in which case there is no lesson to learn from this story...
